The PHS News
The Newsletter of the Patterson Historical Society FEBRUARY 2010
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The PHS office (downstairs in the Lawlor Building) will be open every Monday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. We’ve been hard at work. — sorting, cataloging, scanning,
protecting and preparing our photographs and other artifacts for permanent storage. We hope you will visit us to help out and see if there are any other projects you
might be interested in helping with. It’s vital you let us know if you will be joining us by e-mailing Pat Ploeger at peppmca@aol.com or calling 845-278-9648. That way we can
notify you if we have to cancel the session.
Two Mysteries
Can you help solve either of these mysteries?
New Additions
One of our latest donations is a number of photographs (including the Hayt Homestead above) and other items relating to the Cornwall family,
which came to us from a distant relative in California. The family lived and farmed on Cornwall Hill Road in Patterson from about 1792 until the
1930s, starting with Samuel Cornwall, a contemporary and friend of Matthew Paterson. We are very excited about this donation, because not only
does it contain some wonderful photos, but we previously had very little on the family. The Cornwalls intermarried with the descendants of
Matthew Paterson and other town families, such as the Hayts and Wheelers.
The 2009 Annual Meeting
PHS held its 2009 Annual Meeting this past November 15. In lieu of a speaker, President Ron Taylor presented a slide show highlighting some of the activities of the Society for the past year,
including:
• At the request of the Patterson Grange, we reviewed the history of the Grange.
• We gave a reprise of a talk at the Library on Haviland Hollow.
• Pat Ploeger organized a talk on the history of Putnam Lake, held at PL VFW Hall, our best attended event of the year.
• We gave a presentation on how to research your old house.
• There was a school visit in June at the Little Red School House, and another this past fall.
• Judy Kelley-Moberg spoke to 5 classes at Matthew Paterson Elementary School.
• We answered a number of queries from people researching their family trees and houses and did some cemetery research.
• Our website got many hits from around the country.
• A photo in the newspaper showed Ron Taylor with Ed O’Connor in front of the map which PHS loaned to the Town.
• Preservation: We continue to attend Planning Board meetings.
• Archives: we continue to work on cataloging our collection.
Our Newest Board Member
At the 2009 Annual Meeting, Patty Lundelius was elected to a three-year term on the PHS Board of Trustees. Patty was born in Mahopac but has lived in Patterson most of her life. She went
to Patterson and Kent elementary and middle schools and to Carmel High School, spending she says, “more time in art and writing classes than anything else.”
Patty’s grandfather, Paul Lundelius, founded the Birch Hill Game Park and Ski area. Her mother worked for the post office for many years, while her father worked part time for the Town of
Patterson. Pat’s own work experiences include being a receptionist, buyer, engineering liaison, and warehouse manager, but most of her work life has been in sales and customer service.
Patty brings great computer skills to the PHS team, as well as interests in photography and genealogy. Welcome, Patty!

This photo (right), taken in 1956, shows a marker on the Watchtower property (on the hill along Route 22) in memory of eight Revolutionary War soldiers. Can you help us with more specific information? Where exactly are the soldiers buried? Did you take part in the ceremony held there in 1956 by the American Legion and the Scouts?

This photograph (left) of the Hayt Homestead was taken at the turn of the 20th century. It is not the Hayt Mansion from Dorset Hollow (West Street, Patterson). It may or may not have been on Cornwall Hill Road. Does anyone remember seeing it or have any further information about it?
